And then it was Winter

Spooky morning

November 15, 2011

It was a spooky morning on the River with the clouds hanging low and the only sounds being the traffic from across the way. The sounds of the neighborhood become more prominent now as the trees are bare and the River flows at a slower pace.

We’ve had a lot of beautiful mornings like these when I like to stand outside and breathe in the cool air and quiet of the mornings. It helps to set the priorities of the day…keep moving, listen more and talk less and be beautiful

Great Weekend

November 7, 2011

The weather was beautiful this weekend and the River took full advantage of it. Calm and fun as people filled up the River with Fall life. The trees are coming to the end of their season and are dropping their leaves in and around the River.

The sailboat was out again testing the wind while kayakers traipsed up, down and all around

A full weekend of fun!…oh yeah and an empty barge too!

A River Weekend

October 31, 2011

The weather guided the beauty of the River this weekend. One of the earliest snowfalls on record brought a beautiful Saturday morning as the River welcomed the flakes and the shore collected the inch or so that officially fell in the neighborhood. By afternoon it was back to fall and the leaves are cooperating with beautiful colors and soft falls onto the ground.

This morning the fog and mist moved downstream along with the flow of the River. Even with gray skies all weekend, you couldn’t help but stare out at the River.

Morning Mist

October 27, 2011

The big cold that roared through last weekend created a morning of fog. As a result, the River has been cooling and chilly mornings have resulted in this floating mist—evidence of the remaining River warmth lifting from the water.

I saw our old friend the Great Blue Heron (not sure if it was Bill or Fred) sail across the River but could not catch up with him. Stay tuned…

More Colors

October 25, 2011

The morning gray sky created a contrasting backdrop for the colors of Longue Vue Hill with sumacs in the foreground lighting up the image. Its gotten quiet on the River and the pace has slowed. Even in the late afternoon when this fisherman came up River, his little craft was just on mosey speed

Fall Weekend

October 23, 2011

The weekend had it all. Rain and cold and sun and warm. My hopes for rebounding fall color came to fruition as the hardier trees came into their own with some beautiful colors presented by long holding leaves.

Boaters are continuing to enjoy their time and even a lazy looking sail boat cruised on by yesterday.

The River continues to be quite high at about 13 feet (flood level this spring reached 21 feet).

Missing Colors

October 21, 2011

Its been a confusing fall for colors. What looked like a spectacular start to the season is shaping up to be a dull non-event. The first few weeks of October had some beautiful red oaks and sumac’s strutting their stuff. But last week’s windy weekend blew most of them off leaving the hardier trees to figure out how to color out with the wet cold weather of this week

Across the River, the hills still appear to have lots of leaves but not much going on with them. We still have plenty of fall left so we’ll keep our fingers crossed and keep updating you!

Busy River

October 17, 2011

Others must have been inspired by Majestic’s fall foliage trips as motor boaters and canoers were out this weekend. While it is still Autumn, the weather turned windy and cooler and with the River still high, the whitecaps on Saturday went from shore to shore.

Football Sunday and so lots of boats headed down to the game

The Old Paddlewheeler

October 14, 2011

Just as I’ve been commenting that there is not too much happening out on the River, the old Gateway Clipper Majestic comes steaming by. This paddle wheeler is part of a fleet of ships harbored down at Pittsburgh’s point (where the Rivers meet) and take visitors and residents out on evening cruises, dance parties and other quick get aways to enjoy some time on the water. We rarely see them this far up River, but checking their website I suspect we are part of the Fall Foliage Cruise (http://www.gatewayclipper.com/cruise_detail.asp) that departs downtown at 9:30 and comes back at 3:30.  They passed by around 2 yesterday. Nice to see them, just missed their paddle wheel horn!…

Woo Hoo…found a video of the  grandmamma of them there paddle wheel whistles (from the Delta Queen). BTW…this video is for my friend Katie who is celebrating her fourth birthday today. Have a super day Katie!!

Today’s pics from the Majestic!
