Glad I got my bread and milk…not really

December 13, 2010

I would say the weather people hit this forecast on the head. They said it would be somewhere between 2-5 inches with increasingly cold winds and temps.

Their only miss was that they were predicting that it would be the big storm that plowed through Minneapolis and Chicago. This was the storm that collapsed the Metrodome roof. Instead we got a nice burst of Lake Effect snows which tend to be lighter and fluffier than the mad storms that bring the northern cold and the southern or western rain clouds.

On the River, it created a beautiful picture where the flakes hung suspended in the air before landing gently on the ground or on the surface.

Later in the day, the geese organized a conga line as they sought a protected area for the night winds

A sunny day on the River

February 27, 2010

Not really…but as I have noted over the past two months, there has just been one day when the sun was out from dawn to dusk.

One of my neighbors was out walking in the snow today (oh yes, it snowed today..another 4 inches or so making it the snowiest February in Pittsburgh history!!!). She told me that she missed the sun so much that her mood had shifted from seasonal affective disorder to clinical affective disorder.

I told her the sun did come out today and I have the pictures to prove it. What do you think?

Stormy snowy day

February 26, 2010

Yet another winter storm greeted the River this morning and all day long. The snow landed softly on the River and coated the shoreline with a new layer of white beauty

Some action on the River in anticipation of another storm!!

February 25, 2010

The coal barges were going back downriver early before any threat of high winds and snow. These are actually due tomorrow so the River will be excited about facing down big winds.

Lots of little breakers and a beautiful translucent setting  sun against the River

Snow riding the ice chunks

February 17, 2010

Lake effect snows today as big flakes fell gently on the water. Many of them sat on top of the River, supported by ice which continues its journey downstream.

Stormy, windy snow

February 10, 2010

The River loves the wind. The currents seem to shift to go up River as the wind pushes in from the west. Little whitecaps show up as the wind approaches 20 mph or so. The snow is blowing horizontally this morning and with the good grace we’ve had, this storm will only bring us 4-6 inches. If we’d had this wind last weekend, drifts would’ve been 20 feet high.

The doves are stoic and stand guard to their food.

The River Does Not Have to Be the Star All the Time

February 9, 2010

The River this week has been so quiet it is as if she knows that there are other distractions keeping all of us from enjoying her beauty.

The beauty of the snow storm will continue for another day as we receive another 5 or so inches. And as long as the snow does not melt, it creates this white wonderland. Soon, however the snow will begin to melt, the streets will be slushy, our cars dirty and our boot soaked. The River will receive all that water and will begin another chapter of rising water.

Does the calm come before of after the storm?

February 7, 2010

The River was actually calm during the entire storm. This morning, the day after the River adds to the beauty of the landscape with its easy movement and gentle downriver flow.

Steam rose in the morning as the temperature sank and the sun warmed it all a bit as the day progressed.

PS. Added a few “documentary pictures from yesterday’s storm. The fourth biggest in Pittsburgh’s storied history.

The Big One Arrives

February 6, 2010

Now this blog is not about the weather, but the River. 20+ inches of snow gets everyone’s attention except perhaps the River. She was calm and at ease this morning, doing her shimmering thing while the rest of us reflected on how to get out of our front door.

Commerce continued as we caught a barge moving up River to fill her holds with coal. It’s peaceful outside for now and the River is taking this one is stride. She has seen many of these over the years. For the rest of us, it only happens every 15-20 years.

The River handles the looming storm with aplomb

February 5, 2010

Wind, rain, snow. It make no difference to the River. Whatever her Mother bring her she deals with it. While the rest of us freak out and go to the store to buy milk and bread in the face of a snow storm, the River just deals with it.
