The River High

December 27, 2011

So even though the River is only at 14 feet at Sharpsburg (flood stage is 21 feet), the River seems really high with the water seemingly flow much quicker than normal.

The gulls have returned and the geese have reclaimed their place in the cold water. Its been a snow free month and since I count a sunny day as any day that the sun makes an appearance, its been pretty good overall. Of course some people want snow for Christmas and their wish may be fulfilled tonight.

A Thankful Weekend

November 28, 2011

Stayed home this weekend and enjoyed long walks along the bloated River as we watched the last few leaves of Fall drop to the ground. The River is high and fast due to flooding in other parts of town and we usually don’t see it this high this late. With the leaves all gone, the River is open for viewing and whether it is the ducks floating by or a barge steaming along, everything is fully visible.

This is the tradeoff for the Winter months. We lost the warmth but pick up the view.

Hope your holiday was filled with love and thanks

Year over Year

June 10, 2011

How did the prolonged spring rains affect River life going into early June. One way is to compare pictures year over year. I’m re-posting the shore line picture taken a few days ago to the shoreline pictures taken last year on this same date.

I’m sure there is a lot happening when I’m not watching the River (like when I was away all day yesterday) and today the most noticeable event was a maintenance barge going up River and the season’s first double barge coming down River.

Floods and Chicks

May 5, 2011

The River dropped precipitously this week and our entire shoreline is revealed and will soon be growing groves of tall standing River grass. We realized that our recent high water may not have been related to our rains but a desire to hold back water from going downstream to the Ohio and Mississippi where flooding has been a problem. The system of recreational lakes and the ability to control water flow on the River means that we can help (somewhat) our down River natives, although it sounds as if even with our little bit of help, many of them will still be suffering from flooding.

Returned to the scene of the month-long gosling incubation to find one recently opened egg. The nest is nicely formed and the shell is cracked at one end. Not sure if there were other eggs since the geese will generally lay 3-5 eggs per nest. We looked around for the family but could not find them today.

Green and the Corps

May 3, 2011

The trees are out in full bloom (it is after all May!). A new barge owned by the Corps of Engineers came quietly down River this afternoon. The crew looked like they were enjoying their trip. Wondered if they were headed down to the Mississippi to where the Corps is blowing up levees? Probably not…

The River is down with our spring floods apparently over. The shoreline has reclaimed her territory and the undergrowth that fills that area will soon make her appearance just as the new goslings have brought their new life to the River

River Running High

April 28, 2011

I guess we’ve gotten use to the River being high this entire month. The shoreline tree roots and the tree bases are completely underwater and the trash that is lining the River seems to be increasing everyday. Out little part of the River seems to attract the trash as the water backs up after passing the marina.

The River Rises and Falls

April 21, 2011

It has been a month of rising and falling water. The River is up today after the rains from earlier in the week and another inch or more is predicted for tomorrow.

The trees along the shore line have been under water for weeks now. Even as the are flooded, their new leaves begin to show themselves as if they do not even notice that their roots are soaked and their truck has become a part of the River.

Across the way, the early hillside trees are out and you can practically see walking trails that no one ever uses.

Just a Quiet Day on The River

March 27, 2011

Not too much as we all await Spring to arrive. Hints and teases just don’t do it when the temperature is below freezing and the wind comes whistling in from the North.

The River is down dramatically today practically back to normal. The geese continue their mating period while a Consol Barge was seen pushing coal up to the Power Plant

Checking Our Benchmarks

March 25, 2011

As the River recedes, she loses her edge as a media star. The parking area downtown known as the “Mon Wharf” is open. The downtown section of I-376 called “the bathtub” is back to normal traffic patterns and the “10th street” bypass, a stretch of road just a few feet higher than the River is moving cars and trucks expeditiously back up to the Strip.

But up here we can watch the daily progression of the River’s decline as more and more shoreline is returned to us. The best news so far is that it does not appear that our Spring flood has left us too much trash. Our neighborhood has our annual River cleanup scheduled in a few weeks and it is never too much fun carrying car tires up the hill

Benchmarking

March 15, 2011

Just so we have a comparison to review later on in the season, please not the water coverage of this lateral tree limb.

It’s really quite an ugly branch and the shoots mostly block the view of the River, but for now, it is just a little tree sculpture
