As the year draws to an end and this blog moves to a more irregular status (Some Days on the Allegheny River), its amazing just how calm and easy-going the River is today. She continues to be high, at least in our neighborhood, and the action has slowed to a goose pace. The geese were just lazing around this morning and gathered around this pair before heading off to feeding grounds nearby. The Consol Barge moved slowly up River with her load of coal for the New Ken power plant. And while I did not see any people on the River, one of our readers saw a bunch of kayaks on shore looking like folks were enjoying the warm December days. Enjoy yours!

More Colors
October 25, 2011The morning gray sky created a contrasting backdrop for the colors of Longue Vue Hill with sumacs in the foreground lighting up the image. Its gotten quiet on the River and the pace has slowed. Even in the late afternoon when this fisherman came up River, his little craft was just on mosey speed
Fall color and calm
September 29, 2011The River was so quiet today. Fog shrouded her in the AM and upon returning at night, she was just as still…a rare occurence in the late hours of the day. But now that cooler weather is here, there is less heating of the daytime air and so less wind creates smooth features. So today’s pics include
- Morning Fog
- Mirror River
- First fall color change, which is located on a different hill from the first color change from last fall (Longue Vue Hill vs VA Hill from last year)
- Lazy little River boat testing her turning radius (or using up fuel) video which shows the River’s calm…

The First Turn
August 12, 2011Today marked the first sign of Fall. Oh, I know…Fall, that is still at least a month away. But the seasons are sneaky and they give you signs that they are lurking around. On the River, the revelation was easy to note when the mist formed on top of the water in the early morning light and lingered there for several hours. The water warmer than the air…fall is around the corner.
By midmorning we were back to summer and the flowers and boats filled the view
Quiet…but what is that clearing?
August 10, 2011The temperature cooled a bit by evening after the day’s thunderstorm’s and there was little activity on the River. These are wonderful peaceful interludes when it feels like the River is all mine and I can just sit back and enjoy the quiet.
Across the way on the hill I call Longue Vue there is some clearing that is occurring. I’ve seen some construction vehicles up there and I assume they are related to the power lines…but what if they are planning to blow up the hill and mine for coal? Oh, I guess the membership at Longue Vue Golf Club would be upset. It would entirely take out the 12th hole!
- Quiet most of the day

Quiet on the River
June 23, 2011That is until 3 PM when (as my wife calls them) the zoom-zoom come out of nowhere and make their presence known. These two look like they are having a pretty cool time setting a new family speed record.
The River is quiet this morning just the birds fluttering about and the water flowing down stream
The Beach Returns
June 7, 2011Lots of my friends are headed off to the beach. Virginia Beach, Rehobeth Beach, Long Beach even Longboat Key. Up here on the River, our beach has finally returned which means we’ve gone from the floods of spring to the heat of summer (and welcome it is).
The KAR (kayak access ramp) is fully available and along the shore you can see waves lapping and the water gently giving way to more and more River sand and mud.
Won’t be long until we’ll be throwing on our suits and jumping in!
- KAR
- A good place to enter the River
- A little rocky here, but calm
Enjoying the River
May 20, 2011May 19th is my birthday (along with Cher, Grace Jones and Ho Chi Minh) so it was just a day to enjoy. The River was relaxed with meals with friends and loved ones. The storms stayed away for most of the day allowing for a day of fun capped off by a birthday party.
Whew…back at the Water
May 14, 2011The desert has a definite beauty but you have to look to see the movements. A lizard on a rock scampering to safety, a road runner proving his metal as dashes across the road before you get there, turkey vultures soaring high above the landscape looking for their next meal. It’s all there but the desert forces you to find it.
At the water the River provides a constant flow. Perhaps its the movement and action that I am drawn to every day that includes the wildlife and human action.
Bu today it was the quiet of the River that drew my attention. After being away, flying on planes, driving on Interstates, it was just plain good to slow down and catch up
