While not exactly a River picture, it’s always good to celebrate and acknowledge new neighbors so I thought I would welcome (for the time being) the new black snake I saw chilling on top of my air conditioner this afternoon. Clancy and I were surveying the back 40 and when I turned around, there he/she was…Surprise!
Not sure what to do about the snake so I called the Township office (re: animal control)…no help there but they referred me to Triangle Pets who serves as the Township’s Animal Control company and when I called them up they told me they don’t handle snakes and besides I should just leave him alone and he’ll probably move away. “Its called nature, you see” he told me. I thanked him for his wisdom.
Now I’m wanting to avoid my snake “specism” thinking that snakes are bad. My research about this guy leads me to believe that he is a non-venomous black rat snake. These guys can be good for rodent control and other small vermin maintenance but I already own a terrier who does a pretty good job already so that position appears filled.
Please compare picture and give me your opinion as that will be critical to whether I move to get him on his way immediately or in a few days.
I moved him off the A/C but then he ducked down below the shrubs and I decided not pursue him within his habitat area even though I have squatter’s rights.I checked into moving options and while I may look for a company who can help me out snake traps seem like a viable and reasonable option. I could trap and release him up at the park in O’Hara near the Township Office or perhaps up near the offices of Triangle Pet Control in Mckees Rocks
Once again, I like the concept of snakes, understand the “nature” thing but am probably having a little NIMBY about this guy residing (perhaps under my house) and spending his summer afternoons on top of my air conditioner. Am I overreacting??

Can we agree that this is a “NON-VENEMOUS” Black Rat Snake?
