Obsessions have their benefits

August 4, 2011

Well perhaps it was not that I was not around when the hummingbirds were fluttering around but that the hummingbirds were actually not fluttering very much.

It seems as if they discovered the feeder this morning (and the evening as well). Perhaps my mixture was not sweet enough (one teaspoon for very 2 oz of water) but I did add a little extra as I often do with my coffee brewing. Not sure why I do that exactly, but I guess it was what my mother did when she made coffee… A little extra for good luck. Well it worked today.

Thanks to Paschal and Manfred for giving us their feeder now that they are back in Germany. Paschal told me it would be early May when the hummers returned. It was actually August 3rd before they hung around long enough!

Hummer Bees

August 2, 2011

Okay, so sometimes it is a little slow on the River like today. Plenty of action over the weekend but come Monday everyone is back to work. Driving back home I also so a big load of coal going up River by rail which explained why there were no coal barges on the River. I have to think that a 25 rail car train carrying coal provides a lot more coal than a 3 car barge.

So that leaves me with the opportunity to find the hummingbirds who stalk the feeder only to flit away when they see me move to bring my camera up to my eyes. In addition to the stealthiness, the few guys I’ve seen don’t seem to be as colorful as I remember from last year but regardless, we’re now on full hummingbird alert so that we can capture and secure a photo of the neighborhood hummers.

In the meantime enjoy the picture of the hummingbee

Weekend Fun…but…

August 1, 2011

Lots of fun things going on the River this weekend. Jet and water skiers along with kids being dragged behind their parents boats.

The high River we saw after the massive rains have begun to give way to the summer heat and the dog days of summer are coming upon us and we all begin to feel the stress of summertime–but it’s that good kind of stress.

I’d say the only missing piece for the summer is to catch a picture of the hummers around the feeder our neighbors left us before they went back to Germany. See the hummers circling, but when they see the camera come off…they scoot away!!!

Cool Looking Day

July 21, 2011

After having lived many years in Texas I always looked for some ways to find cool days in the summer. My rationale about heat was that it was only 100 degrees from 3-5 PM and that at 8 AM it was a cool 80!

Now that the heat has stretched north to our part of the world, the same rule applies and this morning, it looked like it was a cool fall day in October. The mist was on the River, Fred was perched on his River stump and the cool air enveloped us all low landers.

The lineup

July 7, 2011

When I’m out at a conference all day, like I was today, I really can’t tell what happened on the River that day. Its more like a glimpse of the River. Today’s glimpse is brought to you by the Goose Family who cruised out into the River from their shore side hideaway in the early evening. Using their stealth single line up to hide how many of them there are, they moseyed out to the middle of the River to enjoy a later afternoon swim.

Summer Storms and A Broken Leg

June 24, 2011

Summer storms are all around us as “a warm front is stalled over our area keeping the air unstable” translated to lots of brief bursts of strong winds and intense rain that must have helped stabilize the air for at least a few minutes before they returned again.

On our afternoon walk Clancy and I went down to the River and saw one of the big geese standing on the shore while his buds all were playing in the water. I thought he might be protecting some of the goslings but after a few moments, I saw him take a few steps and noticed that his leg was broken as he limped into the water.

check out the left leg

Whew…back at the River

June 20, 2011

Always great to get away but equally great to come back home. Was busy back at work and recovering from vacation but caught what looks like a new GBH on the shoreline this afternoon. Caught a cool picture of him flying away at low altitude.

Almost like a holiday weekend

June 6, 2011

It was busy this weekend on the River. Boaters, barges and birds were all aflutter with activity. I preferred to just laze around and watch it all unfold without having to do too much about it. Had a request for a goose video but they were pretty busy doing nothing also until Sunday evening when they decided to go out and visit some boaters in the middle of the River…or perhaps the boaters went out to see them…

Bunch of videos to share. Watch how Harry the Hare stays in the shadow to eat. It’s like he’s dining al fresco under the canopy, although I guess he does this all the time.

Memorial Day

May 31, 2011

The River was full of action this weekend and we sat back and enjoyed it all. Boaters, barges and birds filled the scenery as summer unofficially began Friday evening.

Across the way at the Yacht Club, I saw a couple of  boaters who brought a case of beer on board Friday  evening, hungout on their boat all weekend and then left with all empties on Monday evening. Ahhhh…America!

Hope your holiday weekend was great

New Wildlife Neighbor

May 25, 2011

While not exactly a River picture, it’s always good to celebrate and acknowledge new neighbors so I thought I would welcome (for the time being) the new black snake I saw chilling on top of my air conditioner this afternoon. Clancy and I were surveying the back 40 and when I turned around, there he/she was…Surprise!

Not sure what to do about the snake so I called the Township office (re: animal control)…no help there but they referred me to Triangle Pets who serves as the Township’s Animal Control company and when I called them up they told me they don’t handle snakes and besides I should just leave him alone and he’ll probably move away. “Its called nature, you see” he told me. I thanked him for his wisdom.

Now I’m wanting to avoid my snake “specism” thinking that snakes are bad. My research about this guy leads me to believe that he is a non-venomous black rat snake. These guys can be good for rodent control and other small vermin maintenance but I already own a terrier who does a pretty good job already so that position appears filled.

Please compare picture and give me your opinion as that will be critical to whether I move to get him on his way immediately or in a few days.

I moved him off the A/C but then he ducked down below the shrubs and I decided not pursue him within his habitat area even though I have squatter’s rights.I checked into moving options and while I may look for a company who can help me out snake traps seem like a viable and reasonable option. I could trap and release him up at the park in O’Hara near the Township Office or perhaps up near the offices of Triangle Pet Control in Mckees Rocks

Once again, I like the concept of snakes, understand the “nature” thing but am probably having a little NIMBY about this guy residing (perhaps under my house) and spending his summer afternoons on top of my air conditioner. Am I overreacting??
