Wildlife Returns…

January 16, 2010

There is still ice on the River although with 40 degree temperatures, there is not much of it left on the ground along the River. Once again, the human made entities near our part of the River keeps the River’s flow from affecting our shore and the ice remains. Will it be gone tomorrow with another 40 degree day?

Birds returned today highlighted by our favorite blue heron who perched on a wall and walked the icy harbor

Another Quiet Day…still with ice

January 15, 2010

Traveling around Pittsburgh, I see the River is clear of ice, but not in my neighborhood. The River is holding on to its icy covering and is extending its shore a third of the way across. Of course this is 66% less than it was a few days ago

This is a true Pittsburgh day. Cold and cloudy. But on the River there is always something to behold.

Yes. The Sun Does Shine!!

January 14, 2010

January 14 and the first full day of sunlight illuminating the River. As reported by our local media, ice floes from upstream are moving down. Not at a furious rate but at that slowwww, slowwww, winter river kind of rate.

Warmer temperatures bring breaks in the ice

January 12, 2010

I saw a news story today that barge traffic is stopped due to River ice and that as the weather warms (above freezing!) there may be some large ice chunks coming down that the barges will need to pay attention to.

You can see the changes in the River but there is not much drama as the River ebbs from the bitter cold.

It is quiet and peaceful on the River today. A nice way to be a walking companion

Ice Across the River

January 10, 2010

6 degrees this morning and overnight, the River placed its blanket clear across to the other side. There were a few opening in the ice, but it was pretty much clear across. Would not try walking but did throw some ice piece and small rocks and they landed firmly on the ice and skidded 30 years or more before coming to rest.

The sun barely makes it up over the hills today but I know that everyday the sun gets a little higher in the sky.

Thank you Sun

January 9, 2010

Today started off quiet and calm. The River and sky recovering from the weather over the past week. The ice floes increased in size as they slid downriver. The ones near the shoe looked like stepping-stones reaching out from the shore.

By mid-afternoon, the sun’s rays came through the parting clouds and provided new light and color on the River.

A funny shimmer and the physics of mood

January 8, 2010

The river had a funny shimmer to it this afternoon. Usually reserved for the mornings when there is little wind, today’s surface looked calm even as it moved back and forth.

The river, near where we live often has an upriver and downriver movement to it. Near the shore, it is upriver as the man-made river elements force the water from the center of the river to retreat from its downriver progressions.

Today’s shimmer (it was actually yesterday’s) was in part created by waves which appeared  longer in their frequency, that is from the top of one crest to the next even in the fairly strong wind.  In warmer condition, this kind of wind would have created small whitecaps but today due to the water’s colder temperatures, there was easiness to the river surface creating a sense of calm. Take long and slow breaths

Six days and no sun on the River

January 7, 2010

Does the river know whether the sun is out or not? I think so. We saw a few glimpses of the 2suns on the river for a bit on 1.1.10 but none since them.

The sun and the river merge together on those days and the river sends back the sun’s light and warmth into the Allegheny River sky for all to see and enjoy…but not today.

Today, the river continues to be coping with the cold…much like the people

Crunchy Sounds

January 6, 2010

Walking along the river bank, the sounds by the river are of the cracking ice, the wind through the trees the mourning doves abandoning their hideaways as I and my dog approach. Our walk on the snow adds an artificial but fun disturbance.

The doves stay close to the water, hiding in the underbrush and then creating their familiar “whoosh” as they fly up into the leafless trees

The River Doesn’t Understand Work

January 4, 2010

The ice cometh into the river

Qualities of the ice

Growing ice

Even though the holidays are over and the work days begin anew, the river does not regard these human conditions with any concern. It persists in its management of the environment as the ice ebbs and flows. And when it flows it moves away from shore and exists as a tiny iceberg exploring a trip south where the warmth will no doubt return it to its pure liquid state.
